Exploring the Critical Barriers to the Implementation of Renewable Technologies in Existing University Buildings

For more than a decade, the European Union has been implementing an ambitious energy policy focused on reducing CO2 emissions, increasing use of renewable and improving efficiency. This paper investigates factors that hinder application technologies (RETs) in existing university buildings Spain Portugal. Following qualitative methodology, 33 technicians working infrastructure management offices 24 universities have interviewed. The identified classified into economic-financial, administrative legislative barriers, architectural, urban planning, technological, networking, social acceptance, institutional others. It is concluded there not sufficient economic incentives to carry out RETs projects this type building. Conditioning can act individually or jointly, generating greater effect. Most participants consider are no acceptance barriers. Knowledge these determinants facilitate actions help implement technology campuses both countries.
